Minority AIDS Project

A Good Idea

Description

Minority AIDS Project (MAP), established in 1985, was created to address the needs of individuals within the African American and Latino communities who are living with HIV/AIDS. MAP has provided a continuum of services that offers comprehensive wrap around HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services for low-income people of color who experience multiple vulnerabilities and are at high risk of HIV infection or transmission within Central and South Central Los Angeles.

Goal / Mission

The Minority AIDS Project's mission is to reduce suffering and deaths due to HIV infection in the African-American and Latino communities by making HIV/AIDS education and related health services available and accessible.

Impact

The Minority AIDS Project provides services and outreach efforts to predominantly African-American and Latino individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the underserved communities of Central and South Central Los Angeles.

Results / Accomplishments

The Minority AIDS Project provides prevention services, treatment adherence, mental health services, case management, substance abuse screenings, food, clothing, transportation, health education, transgender services, and in-home nursing care to more than 1,200 clients living with HIV/AIDS per month. The African-American community accounts for 75% of the client population and the Latino community represents 21% of the population served by the organization.
