Per Pupil Spending

Measurement Period: 2021-2022
This indicator shows the current expense of education per average daily attendance (ADA). The current expense of education is calculated based on salaries, employee benefits, books and supplies, equipment, and other services. ADA is defined as the total days of student attendance divided by total days of school instruction.

Why is this important?

Research in the late 1990's suggested that spending more money on education did not improve outcomes for students. However, more recent research has shown that investing more money in teacher salaries, school construction, and schools with high populations of low-income students does, in fact, close the achievement gap and leads to improved student outcomes. This research recommends that state and local policy makers should 1) ensure school finance reforms support students and teachers in a thoughtful manner, 2) invest more with students who have greater needs, and 3) invest in human resources, especially the quality of teachers.
